Virtue: Prologue released

Virtue: Prologue is out today, 22 October 2026, on PC, with free access through Pantaloon’s newly launched Playbill service. It is available without a paid subscription, according to Gamer Social Club’s launch report.[1] Playbill lists the Devolver Digital release as a timed exclusive, though no end date for that arrangement has been announced.[2]

This is a separate visual novella accompanying Virtue and a Sledgehammer, rather than the release of the main game. Pantaloon’s announcement dates that game for 27 October 2026, putting the prologue five days ahead of it.[2]

First love and family conversations

A single-player experimental visual novel, Virtue: Prologue introduces the characters and relationships at the heart of Virtue and a Sledgehammer. Its story centres on the complicated feelings of first love with a wealthy boy from Barcelona, alongside nighttime visits to a graveyard with the protagonist’s sister and conversations held up a tree.

Rock Paper Shotgun’s report, reproduced by Maxbit Games, describes a visual novel that uses assets from the main game, with expressive text presentation and interaction through the left mouse button.[3] The focus here is on the people and their relationships, rather than the violent catharsis described for Virtue and a Sledgehammer.

Juno Menager created the prologue in collaboration with Deconstructeam and Selkie Harbour, with Devolver Digital publishing. Deconstructeam and Selkie Harbour previously worked together on Many Nights a Whisper, released on 29 April 2025, a short narrative game centred on an ancient archery ritual.[4] Deconstructeam’s other games include The Red Strings Club, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, Essays on Empathy and Gods Will Be Watching.[5]

Access and flashing-image warning

Pantaloon’s homepage has a download entry for Virtue: Prologue.[6] Although the game does not require a paid Playbill subscription, Rock Paper Shotgun’s report says access requires an email sign-up through the service.[3]

That report also flags flashing images, with the writer saying they could not find an option to reduce the effect. This is an observation from the outlet rather than an official accessibility or patch notice, but it is worth checking before playing if flashing effects are a concern.[3]
