イギリスをモデルにした架空の地方、ガラル地方を舞台にしたターン制のロールプレイングゲームです。プレイヤーはポケモンと呼ばれる生き物を捕まえて育て、戦わせながら地方を旅し、8つのジムバッジを集めて、最終的に現チャンピオンに挑みます。本作ではダイマックスとキョダイマックスという仕組みが登場し、ポケモンを一時的に巨大化させて攻撃を強化できます。自由に探索できるワイルドエリアが主要な場所をつなぎ、天候によって出現するポケモンが変わるほか、最大4人で遊べる協力型のレイドバトルもあります。Nintendo Switchで初のポケモン本編作品であり、シリーズ恒例の強化版の再発売ではなく、DLC拡張を採用したことでも注目されました。
