Dal 1939 al 1941, la Germania stupì il mondo introducendo la Blitzkrieg, un nuovo modo di fare la guerra incentrato su massicce punte di lancia corazzate e sul supporto aereo ravvicinato. I rapidi attacchi a sorpresa e gli accerchiamenti degli eserciti meccanizzati sostituirono la logorante guerra di trincea della Prima guerra mondiale.
